The Friends of the Bohm Theatre, in partnership with the Greater Albion Chamber of
Commerce & Visitors Center, invite you to relive a moment of cinematic marvel, as they
celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the American classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” on
2024 is a year of anniversaries for Albion’s beloved Bohm Theatre, celebrating its own
95th anniversary, and the 10th anniversary of the reopening after its restoration. “We felt
the screening of this iconic film was a great way to celebrate our theatre,” said
Executive Director, Shannon Aikins, “welcoming the community into the equally iconic
Bohm for this fun, family-friendly event seemed perfect as the theatre continues to fulfill
its mission of providing a vibrant gathering place for diverse audiences, nurturing the
creative spirit, exploring new ideas, and fostering cultural understanding through film,
performing arts, and community events. I’ve seen the movie quite a few times,” Aikins
remarked, “but never on the big screen, I can’t wait!”
The Wizard of Oz 85th Anniversary Celebration includes a costume contest under the
theatre’s original marquis beginning at 6:15 pm, with a grand prize of a hot air balloon
ride for two being provided by Reflections Hot Air Balloon Team. Other prizes include a
puzzle and game package worth $100 and an Albion, Michigan prize valued at $50. “We
encourage people to come dressed as their favorite character, we can’t wait to see
Dorothy, Glinda, Scarecrow, and even the Flying Monkeys represented.” Wizard of Oz
character cut outs will be located at several locations in downtown Albion for fun photo
opportunities before the screening. A full list of the locations will be made available
soon and shared on the theatre’s Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as the
Chamber’s website and social media pages.
The Bohm Theatre’s Wizard of Oz Celebration and Screening are made possible by
several community sponsors. “We could not provide these types of events without our
outstanding community partners and their support,” said Aikins, “we want to thank the
Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, Knauf Insulation, The Body
Shop, Haas Trucking, Inc., Barbour Heating and Cooling, Anna’s House of Flowers, John and Jan Shedd and
Dancing Dogs Bakery for serving as sponsors of the Celebration.”
The Celebration screening of the Wizard of Oz is being offered at matinee pricing of
$5.00, and the Ford Accessibility Discount will be available. The discount provides a
50% discount on most movies and live events for individuals 60 and over, as well as
individuals on Medicaid or the EBT Program. Tickets are available online, but the Ford
Discount can only be utilized when purchasing tickets at the box office.
Released on August 25, 1939, and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film was
one of the earliest major technicolor pictures, and you will be able to enjoy all magic,
splendor, and beauty of the land of Oz, the Emerald City, and the yellow brick road on
the big screen at the Bohm. I’ve seen the movie quite a few times,” Aikins remarked,
“but never on the big screen, I can’t wait!”
And much like Dorothy’s classic line, “there’s no place like home,” the Friends of the
Bohm Theatre hope you will “Come Home to the Bohm” in downtown Albion to join in
the Celebration.
